Was it proven that Witches were originated and widespread in England ?

Witchcraft was 'thought' to be widespread in England as in Europe. Matthew Hopkins the infamous 'witch hunter' put lots of innocent people to death in a frenzy. These were often simple country folk who seemed a bit odd, or whose neighbour blamed them for some misfortune. They were often tied to a ducking chair and submerged under water. If they died they were found not to be witches (but dead nonetheless) if they survived the ducking they were said to witches and hung (in England witches were hung, not burnt at the stake like the rest of Europe). It was against the law to call yourself a witch, or practice witchcraft in England until 1951, when the law was repealed. Wica does originate from England, and was probably formed from 'picts' and later the druids.
