My cat sharpens his claws on the staircase?

On the staircase, the steps, the dining room table. I don't really mind the dining room table, but he's ruining the wood on the staircase and the steps. He was a scratching post but he refuses to use it. How do I make him stop scratching the staircase? We trim his nails every so often when we take him to the groomers. We don't want to declaw him.
